Candlewood Lake is a beautiful body of water located in western Connecticut. It borders five towns - Sherman, New Fairfield, Danbury, Brookfield and New Milford - in western CT and is nearing 100 years old. It is the largest man-made lake in the state and is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. The lake was created in the 1920s as part of a project to generate hydroelectric power, and its construction had a significant impact on the surrounding area.

The idea for the creation of Candlewood Lake was first proposed in the early 1920s by a group of investors who were looking to build a hydroelectric power plant in the area. They believed that the Housatonic River, which flowed through the region, would provide an ideal location for such a project. However, they soon realized that the river's flow was not consistent enough to generate the desired amount of power.

To solve this problem, the investors decided to build a dam on the river that would create a reservoir of water with a more constant flow. They hired engineers and architects to design the dam, and construction began in 1926. The project was completed in 1928, and the resulting lake was named Candlewood Lake after the nearby Candlewood Mountain.

The creation of Candlewood Lake had a significant impact on the surrounding area. The lake flooded several towns and villages, including the town of Sherman, which was completely submerged. Many residents were forced to relocate, and the construction of the lake caused significant environmental damage, as well. The flooding destroyed many acres of farmland, and the construction of the dam disrupted the natural flow of the Housatonic River.

Despite these negative effects, Candlewood Lake quickly became a popular destination for recreation. Boating, fishing, and swimming were all popular activities on the lake, and several marinas and boat clubs were established in the years following its creation. The lake also provided a source of drinking water for nearby towns and cities.

Today, Candlewood Lake is a beloved part of the Connecticut landscape. It attracts visitors from all over the region, who come to enjoy its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While its creation had a significant impact on the surrounding area, the lake has also brought many benefits to the region and remains an important part of Connecticut's history and identity.
